Greenoak International School (GIS) in Port Harcourt, Nigeria is looking to appoint a Head of School .
GIS has a population of over 180 highly motivated students. The school admits children ages 5 years to 16 years from various corners of the globe. GIS operates a hybrid curriculum, consisting of the innovative International Primary Curriculum (IPC), British/American Curricula and the Nigerian curriculum. This provides a balanced education aimed at producing truly intelligent, skillful, motivated, confident and morally sound children.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all the departments of the School. Other responsibilities include:
Set the tone and model the values of the School in interactions with students, families, staff and the community at large.
Set boundaries and communicate clear expectations about performance and behavior.
Articulate to prospective parents and the community the educational theory and practice of the School’s curriculum.
Provide opportunities for parents to grow in their understanding of the School’s curriculum and mission and nurture avenues of support.
Participate in the delivery of the curriculum as appropriate and needed.
Provide and support on-going professional development for faculty and staff.
Head–Board Relationship
Keep the Board and appropriate committees informed of issues related to the governance of the School.
Bring pertinent information to the Board regularly and work closely with the Secretary of the Board.
Manage the school in a fiscally responsible manner.
Develop and recommend a budget to the Board each year.
Set an example of openness, fairness, curiosity, compassion and authenticity for students and families.
Interact on a daily basis with students, and develop meaningful and appropriate relationships with them.
Qualifications
Advanced academic degree; credibility in the academic community;
Experience as a Head of School with demonstrated strength in matters of curriculum, pedagogy and student welfare
Demonstrated track record of leadership success, ideally at an independent school;
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing is mandatory
Deep understanding of the ethos of independent schools
A commitment to academic excellence;
Ability to motivate a team to work toward common goals;
Strategic thinking capacity, proven builder of programs and organizations;
Well-honed interpersonal skills and a collaborative leadership style;
A keen interest in joining a young, evolving institution;
A track record of success in working collaboratively with a board of trustees;
A commitment to cultivating a culturally and ethnically diverse staff;
Global citizenship and sensitivity to diverse cultural nuances, values and traditions;
Passion for educating young people;
Impeccable judgment, integrity and maturity;
Ability to travel internationally for business purposes.

ABOUT THE JOB DESCRIPTION: The above job description is comprehensive and includes duties and responsibilities envisioned for the near future, as the school transitions from one growth stage to another. Emphasis on particular duties will shift dependent upon the growth of the school. For example, some duties, like teaching, will decrease in nature, as the school grows. Other duties, such as development and campus planning will expand as the school grows. The Board recognizes that the initial focus of this position needs to be on solidifying the school’s daily operations and teaching along with community building for the entire school community. The Board acknowledges its responsibility for helping to cover some areas that may later fall to the Head of School.
